Going on a safari in South Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. There are many options to choose from, but after much research, we decided on the amazing Kapama Game Reserve and absolutely loved our experience there. Nestled in the heart of Limpopo Province, Kapama offers a perfect blend of luxury and wilderness. Here’s an overview to help you prepare for this unforgettable experience.
Getting to Kapama
You can choose to either drive to Kapama from Johannesburg or fly there. We opted for the flight and were pleased with Kapama’s excellent service, including a convenient pickup from Hoedspruit Airport. The River Lodge, our chosen accommodation, was just a 20-minute drive from the airport. On the way, we were thrilled to spot giraffes and impalas, setting the stage for an exciting safari experience
First Impressions and Safari Experience
Kapama’s attention to detail is clear from the moment you arrive. The staff greets you warmly and gives a quick orientation to help you settle into the African wilderness. From the first lunch, every moment is about enjoying the beauty and peace of the reserve.
Kapama offers luxury in the wild, with accommodations that mix elegance with the stunning beauty of the African bush. Every part of the lodge, from the rooms to the common areas, helps you connect with nature while staying comfortable.
The heart of Kapama is its game drives. These trips are amazing, bringing you face-to-face with the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo) and more, guided by experienced rangers. The drives, in the morning and evening, show you different views of the bush.
A special part of the game drives is the midway stop for drinks and snacks, set against the beautiful African sunset. Enjoying a glass of wine or beer surrounded by the vast landscape is an unforgettable experience.

Things to Keep in Mind Before You Arrive:
- Weather and Packing: South African safari temperatures can vary greatly, so pack layers. Include lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime and warmer layers for cooler evenings. Neutral colors are best to blend into the environment.
- Health and Safety: Be aware of any health advisories for the region. Some areas may require malaria prophylaxis, and insect repellent is a must to protect against bites.
- Sun Protection: High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are essential to protect yourself from the sun during long game drives.
- Electricity and Charging: Most lodges have electricity and charging points, but it’s a good idea to bring a power bank for your devices, especially for long game drives.
- Tipping: Tipping is customary in safari lodges, so it’s a good idea to carry cash. Check the lodge’s tipping guidelines and budget accordingly for guides, trackers, and lodge staff.
